Yesterday when I was scrolling through Google news I saw something that said “Women who have sex outside marriage or being raped should be punished to death”. I was shocked to see even the headline. Reading further I found that this was said by a Maharashtrian politician Abu Azmi. He told the press that women who have sex outside marriage and rape victims should be hanged to death. Renowned indian tabloid quoted him saying
“If a woman is caught (in a rape case), then both she and the boy should be punished. In India, there is death penalty for rape, but when there’s consensual sex outside marriage, there’s no death penalty against women.”
He also mentioned that “Boys will be Boys”. I mean what the hell does that mean? Are boys evolved by nature to commit rape or sexually harass a woman? This is ridiculous. First of all the idea of hanging women for rape is bulls***. They are not raping men. They are the victims here. After seeing so many horrible incidents like the one happened in Delhi last year, saying something like this will increase the number of rape cases and definitely won’t help the society in anyway. The news has created a great controversy all over India and people are already feeling angry towards the issue.
Consider the case of a paedophile. If a man sexually harasses a little girl who doesn’t even know anything about rape, will she be hanged to death and the man will be set free? This is completely against whatever freedom the country has offered us so far. Rape is a punishable offense and the bastards who commit them should be hanged to death. No excuses. And women having sex outside marriage is nobody’s business. Consensual sex involves privacy of two individual people and government has got nothing to do with it. If someone is being forced and things go out of hand, then the judicial system has all the right to take action. Until then it is not a government’s job to step into another man/woman’s life.
The politicians claim was what if the girl lodges a false complaint. Just because this happens in a couple of cases, you can’t change the entire legal system. Then why do we have several set of courts and a law system that is existence since the establishment of Indian constitution.
The son and daughter-in-law of Abu Azmi told the press that they are completely against what he said and they are ashamed to hear such comments. We elect someone and entrust him to govern the system and create policies and when they do or say something like this, it deeply hurts.
I don’t read a lot of political news and I haven’t written any political blog posts in my blog so far. But what I read on the news made me angry. As a blogger, the least I could do is write something that reflects my opinion.
